Week 3 - World Cup Week!

Week 3 FUE LA MEJOR!!!! MUNDO DE LA COPA AMERICA!

All campers had a blast!! The groups were named after Latin American Countries. The CIT’s represented Venezuela, the Campers represented Mexico and the younger campers represented Colombia. In Arts and Craft they got to draw and paint their flags on a huge banner which was also displayed in the room the entire week! Mexico was the winner of the “Banner Contest” and the runner up was Venezuela. Each group learned about the country that they represented. Mrs. Chambliss brought in music and pictures of clothing from these countries.

I think our favorite was La Cocina. We learned to make AREPAS and TOSTONES and of course we got to eat it too! Emma loved TOSTONES!

Coach Chris kept us busy in Tennis. At the end of the lesson we played a game against BLANCO y AZUL. This week we also had a great time at Golf. At the driving range Pros Larry and Mike organized a contest who will hit the ball the furthest with our drivers. The winner for the CIT boys was FREDDY. CHRISTINA was the winner for the girl campers.

Coach ALI did a fantastic job in Soccer. Everybody played…everybody wants to play soccer at Camp. She even played with us when we played a scrimmage game. We will miss her next week, but Coach Simon will be here.

Fun Friday or Viernes de Diversion was crazy. Mrs. Chambliss again brought in a huge water slide, a dunk tank, cotton candy and snow cone. People playing golf at Palm Aire wanted to join the party. There were also music and water balloons. The counselors had a fun time with a chocolate syrup, shaving cream and pancake syrup fight. Too bad Campers were not invited to this!

Ms. Yinger and Ms. Geary planned this fun game where the counselors launched water balloons to the fairways and we had to try to catch it with our towels. FUN FUN FUN! Also, we played Spanish telephone and pop the balloon with our feet game against BLANCO y AZUL.

The best part of this week is that we all made so many new friends…CITs have their buddies and they help them all the time. They played BINGO and sit with them at lunch time. Some have volunteered to be with the younger group throughout the day.

WEEK 2: Mundo de los Deportes!

WOW! What a week! All campers, counselors and Junior CITs enjoyed the week a lot. Starting with soccer, Assistant Coach Dan put all to run and practice some drills that were awesome.  Of course they played a scrimmage game at the end and everybody was sweating ready for golf and tennis. Coach Eddie is great…even though everybody says that he is a little tough because he makes them run laps and want everybody to take Tennis seriously….also pick up balls when they are done…He and Coach Chris “campers’ favorite” are doing a great job!

Gold Pro Mike is helping campers and Junior CITs understand golf a little more each day…they have used all clubs and have learned about ball position, stance and golf swing.  I was particularly impressed with Jimmy… his golf swing is outstanding and very consistent. He was even calling his shots and the distance…I heard…”to the white flag Mrs. Chambliss…that’s close to 150 yards!!!  Also Keenan, Tyler, Camille and Joe.

In Cocina all campers enjoyed cooking AREPAS con queso.  All were into making sure that their arepas were round and perfect. Emma and Connor were the best chefs.

The dress up game with paper and props was the funniest game. Kennan for Junior CITs, Matthew for the Campers and Andres for the younger group were hilarious. The winner was Matthew.

The week ended with our Fun Friday…Viernes de Diversion! The day started with an Ultimate Frisbee game that Ms. Yinger and Miss Geary lead…with Fadia as the official announcer, followed by a Hand Ball game and an amazing Scavenger Hunt in Holes 1 and 18 of the Pines Golf Course…what a run! The grand prize was very far and they all had to run to find clues…everything was in Spanish, so it was bit of a challenge.  After all, they all enjoyed the water slide, dunk tank, loud music and eating cotton candy and more than one snow cone!

At the end they announced that Best CIT was Lola, Best CIT Motivated to learn Spanish….everybody yelled…KENNAN!!!! Best Counselor, Jessica. Best Care Taker Counselor, Peter and Best Camper, Bryce!

We are looking forward to Week 3 “Semana de la Copa Mundial” (World Cup Week)!!! GET READY…it’s going to be FUN!

Week 1: AROUND THE WORLD!

From Christina:

The first week at Hola Mundo Camp was so fun! On Monday we had a huge inflatable slip and slide. We put baby shampoo on it so we could go even faster and we raced against each other. We also played tennis and golf. The Spanish words of the week were correr and jugar which we tried to use throughout the day.

Coach Simon was awesome this week. He taught us so many soccer skills, and then we placed a scrimmage game. The outdoor games were also fun. Ms Yinger and Ms. Geary set up the field with great games like capture the flag, monster basketball, relays and Hola Mundo’s counselor favorite, a water balloon launch. We had to catch the balloons with our towels.

The dance contest was a blast. The DJ placed great music and everybody danced. We were taught to dance merengue. Fun Friday finished it all with a track and field day where BLANCO defeated AZUL. We also had a giant water slide, dunk tank, cotton candy, and snow cones.

Congratulations to Drew and Lindsey who were the CITs of the week!

WOW what a week! I can’t wait to see what next week will bring!

Our First Day at Hola Mundo Camp

From Lola:

The first day of Hola Mundo we had our CIT duties to accomplish. We played tennis, golf and the hugging game. We had a slip and slide. It was so much fun. We blew up balloons, wrapped them around our ankles and stomped on the other team’s balloons. A total day of fun! YAY!

- Lola

And from Nick:

The first day of Hola Mundo was GREAT!. Meeting everybody and playing with them was fun. At the end of the day we played an indoor game, the hugging game, which was a lot of fun. We also played Bingo after lunch. If you won, you got a prize like a whoopy cushion, a mini baseball, a mini football, a nerf ball and the grand prize was a gift card to Carrabba’s Italian Grill in Pompano Beach (at Hola Mundo Camp, everybody wants to win the prize). All of us had a great time!

CIT Training Update - CPR Certification, and Open House!

From Keenan:

Honestly, earlier, I wasnt looking forward to CPR training. Once I arrived, however, i was proved wrong! This training was both educating…and fun! My peers and I learned very important subjects such as CPR, and what to do when a camper is hurt. This lessons will help me both as a CIT and as a young man. ¡Hola Mundo es el mejor campo nunca!

– Keenan

From John Henry:

I learned so much at Hola Mundo. On Thursday May 15, we learned about CPR. I learned so much stuff. The CPR was very educating and interesting. Everything that I learned will help me in the future. We got to practice CPR on dummies. It was so much fun. We learned many other important subjects such as what to do if somebody is drowning. Everything we learned will definently help us and will one day save a life. Thank you Hola Mundo!
